The interest in natural gas as an energy source is constantly increasing. New finds are being discovered every year. However, gas resources are most often far from the consumers. This creates a need to transport and store the gas. So that it can be transported great distances, natural gas is cooled to such a low temperature that it condenses and becomes a liquid. In its liquid form, the gas takes up 600 times less space. This makes it easy to transport by sea to land-based storage tanks. From here, it goes to the consumers.
The above processes place great demands on both parent and filler metals, which must have good mechanical properties at low temperatures. To meet the industry’s severe requirements, Avesta Welding has developed 316L/SKR Cryo.
AVESTA 316L/SKR Cryo (E316L-17)
316L/SKR Cryo is a newly developed Cr-Ni-Mo all-round electrode for welding ASTM 316L and similar steels in cryogenic applications where the requirements include > 0.38 mm Charpy lateral expansion (or > 32 J impact strength) at minus 130 – 196°C.

Avesta 316L/SKR Cryo gives a fully austenitic weld metal without ferrite. Thus, it is also particularly suitable for use in the urea industry and in structures where low magnetic permeability (a non-magnetic material) is required.
The electrode has been especially developed to give the same flexibility that distinguishes Avesta’s 3D electrodes, i.e. extremely good weldability in position welding – PF (3G, 3F), PD and PE (4G, 4F).
316L/SKR Cryo is available as 2.50, 3.25 and 4.00 mm diameter electrodes. It is supplied in environment-friendly plastic capsules packed in cardboard boxes.
