Electrodes for 75 years

Long experience and continuous development of products and production methods have led to Avesta Welding establishing itself as a world-leading manufacturer of welding consumables for stainless steel. This year, we are celebrating 75 years of making electrodes.

Seventy-five years ago in 1933, Avesta Jernverk, the local steelworks, was one of the first companies in the world to start production of covered electrodes for the manual arc welding of stainless steel. Flowing from this, Avesta Welding was formed in 1986.

“Welding products from Avesta soon became known for their high quality. Today, Avesta Welding is one of the world’s leading producers of stainless steel welding consumables. The company has operations in over 70 countries,” states Jan Engfeldt, MD of Avesta Welding.

At the start of the 60’s, Avesta Welding was the first company in the world to offer AC/DC electrodes that, thanks to their good weldability, contributed to revolutionising the methods for welding stainless steel.

In the beginning, the production method was simple and very much like that for making candles, i.e. the core wire was dipped in the mixture that then formed the coating. With the development of new steel grades that require new filler metals, the number of ingredients in coatings has risen from the initial four or five per product to the current thirty or so.

Research and development have always been extremely important elements in the company’s electrode manufacturing operations.

Avesta Welding now has a complete product programme that, as regards stainless steel applications, covers almost all customers’ needs. The company has customers in all major segments of industry. Chief amongst these are the pulp and paper and the chemical industries, both of which make great use of stainless steel.

Avesta Welding is at the forefront of the development of covered electrodes and flux cored wire (FCW). In recent years we have launched two entirely new product concepts that optimise welding properties in various positions. The electrode concept comprises 2D electrodes for flat welding, 3D for all-round welding and 4D, a special product for welding pipes. Our new range of stainless steel FCWs also employs the 2D, 3D concept.

“Continuous improvement of our product offerings has always been the way we work. Now, as we celebrate 75 years, we will be reinforcing this and, to build further on our traditions, continuing to invest in production and product ranges. Keep an eye open for the results!” says Jerker Roos, marketing manager at Avesta Welding.

Avesta Welding can supply welding consumables that meet all the requirements placed on the steel in question. Our operations are highly focused on customer needs and wishes. Development is carried out in close collaboration with Outokumpu Stainless. A good example of this is our range of matching filler metals for welding Outokumpu’s innovative new duplex steel, LDX 2101®

For LDX 2101®, Avesta Welding supplies matching filler metals for all welding methods – MMA, FCAW, MIG, TIG and SAW.   Via a network of local sales offices, agents and distributors, our customers have rapid and easy access to all the company’s products and services.

At our Avesta headquarters and locally, we can call upon tremendous resources of knowledge, expertise and technical equipment.

As the market has widened and stainless steel has won ground in an increasing number of fields, our role as a sounding board and problem solver has become more prominent. New steels and new applications demand new welding methods. Jan Engfeldt, MD of Avesta Welding, is optimistic about the future.

“We are the only welding company in the world that is one hundred percent focused on stainless steel. We intend to continue being the stainless steel experts in the welding industry,” he concludes.
